Wuppertal is a city of around 350,000 people in North Rhine-Westphalia, roughly 30 kilometres east of Düsseldorf and just south of the Ruhr area. It stretches for many kilometres along the narrow valley of the river Wupper, with steep residential hillsides on both sides. The city was formed in 1929 from several towns, among them Elberfeld and Barmen, which grew rich on textiles in the nineteenth century. It is best known for the Schwebebahn, a suspended railway that has run above the river since 1901, and it is home to the Bergische Universität.

Property prices here are among the lowest of any large city in western Germany. That makes Wuppertal relevant mainly for buyers who want rental income with a small amount of capital.
