Mülheim an der Ruhr is a city of around 170,000 people on the river Ruhr in North Rhine-Westphalia, lying between Essen and Duisburg in the western Ruhr area. Düsseldorf is less than 30 km away. The town is mainly residential and noticeably greener than most of its neighbours, with large wooded areas along the river valley. Aldi Süd has its headquarters here, and the city is home to two Max Planck research institutes and the Hochschule Ruhr West, a university of applied sciences.
