Lichtenberg, in the east of Berlin, extends from locations close to the city centre along Frankfurter Allee and Rummelsburg Bay (Rummelsburger Bucht) to Hohenschönhausen in the north. Alongside estates of prefabricated panel buildings (Plattenbausiedlungen) in Fennpfuhl, Friedrichsfelde and Neu-Hohenschönhausen, there are neighbourhoods of period buildings (Altbaukieze) such as the Weitlingkiez and the Kaskelkiez, villas and housing-estate developments in Karlshorst, and new-build quarters on Rummelsburg Bay. Tierpark Berlin is located in Friedrichsfelde.

The district
The district has 318,905 residents (as of 30/06/2026). At 94.5%, its share of rental flats is the highest in Berlin, and its average flat size of 64.7 m² is the smallest (IBB, 2024). Lichtenberg station (Bahnhof Lichtenberg), Ostkreuz station in the immediate vicinity, as well as the U5, the S-Bahn and trams provide good transport links.
For investors
Lichtenberg offers a location close to the city centre at moderate prices: the purchase price level is around €4,698/m² (Berlin Expert Committee on Property Values (Gutachterausschuss), 2025), and the asking rent (Angebotsmiete) is €13.33/m² (IBB 2025). Owner-occupied flats (Eigentumswohnungen) are comparatively rare because of the high share of rental flats. Three social preservation areas (soziale Erhaltungsgebiete) (Kaskelstraße, Weitlingstraße, Fanningerstraße) affect the period-building neighbourhoods in Rummelsburg and Lichtenberg. Risks: below-average household net income (€2,350, IBB 2024), asking rents below the Berlin average, as well as the Berlin-wide rent cap (Mietpreisbremse) and conversion ban (Umwandlungsverbot). Areas such as Karlshorst or Rummelsburg differ considerably from the large housing estates (Großsiedlungen).
